Discover first-hand what it takes to care for 49 chimpanzees living in a sanctuary environment where they have 95 acres of forest to roam through every day. See how much food they consume, meet the crew that cares for them, and see chimpanzee social activity up close from a viewing platform that overlooks the jungle. You will also learn about chimpanzee conservation initiatives in the wild and the major concerns surrounding their extinction, including habitat encroachment, poaching, and the illicit pet trade. By engaging in this unique event, you will obtain a greater knowledge of the issues encountered by chimpanzees in both captivity and the wild. Additionally, you will have the option to contribute to their protection by supporting the sanctuary’s programs and promoting awareness about these concerns.

Details

The 1-day Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Tour leads you to Lake Victoria’s lone chimpanzee sanctuary or island (Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary), where you may visit and learn about the saved chimpanzees who found their eternal love and safety there. Chimpanzees form friendships with each other and their human caregivers on this island. These friendships are built through daily interactions and activities, such as feeding sessions and playtime. The bond between the chimpanzees and their caregivers is a testament to the sanctuary's dedication to providing a nurturing and enriching environment for these intelligent creatures.

The morning and afternoon sessions of the Ngamba Island chimpanzee day tour begin at 7:00 and 11:00 a.m. After a briefing, meet with our driver guide and go to Lake Victoria. We will board a speed boat in Lake Victoria and travel for about 45 minutes before arriving at Ngamba Island.

As you go along the lake, you will see many local fishermen and their traditional fishing equipment, making it a great journey for everyone who has always desired to visit Lake Victoria. Several different bird species will be seen on the lake along the way, including cattle egrets and cormorants. As you land on Ngamba Island, you take in the breathtaking view of the chimpanzee island and start spotting monitor lizards in the island's waters, as well as a variety of bird species that come to feed along the water banks, including singing black-headed weavers, spur-winged lapwings, African open-billed storks, sacred ibis, Egyptian goose, yellow-billed dark, kingfishers, and possibly fishing eagles.

Then you'll be driven or transferred to the visitors center, where you'll hear about the history of Ngamba Island's monkey sanctuary and the activities available there. You will then be offered a cup of tea, and from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the chimp caretakers will take you to an elevated platform where you may see the chimps feeding up close. You may also see monkey behaviors like eating, playing, and relaxing.

On the island, you may witness a variety of bird species, as well as different plant and tree varieties. After the chimp feeding, which runs from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., you will be toured around the island's many facilities, including the chimp food shop. The chimpanzee caregiver outlines how to properly feed chimps and what types of food are provided to them. The management provides just a few fruits, such as pineapples, oranges, tomatoes, apples, watermelons, passion fruits, jackfruits, carrots, cabbage, and cassava, which may be insufficient for the chimpanzees given their foraging activities in the forest.

You will also visit the chimp clinic, where you will learn how to care for the animals, the many therapies available, and their current health status. You will help with food preparation as one of the behind-the-scenes activities for the afternoon guests while being supervised by a caregiver. At 11:45 a.m., you will board a speed boat and return to dry land. Participants in the afternoon session must board their boats by 4:00 p.m. We set off on our return journey in the evening, but we want to stop at the equator along the route to see how the boat will be pushed by the forces of the south and north poles, which will attempt to hold it fixed.

When crossing the equator, the boat's engine requires somewhat more power. This is the ideal area to go swimming. You will get a few minutes to enjoy the activity before resuming your journey. As you arrange your return trip, our driver will be waiting to pick you up and transport you to your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala. This concludes your one-day Ngamba Island chimp excursion.
