Details

The Shoebill and Mabamba wetlands are by far the greatest sites in Uganda to increase your chances of spotting one. It is also the most easily accessible, being located on Lake Victoria's shores and only an hour's drive from either Entebbe or Kampala. Mabamba, a RAMSAR wetland and Important Bird Area (IBA), is home to over 300 bird species, including seven of Uganda's 12 Lake Victoria Basin restricted species.

You will be picked up around 7 a.m. or earlier, depending on where you are staying in Entebbe or Kampala. It takes roughly an hour to go to Mabamba in Buwaya; it may take longer if we stop to see birds along the way. We may encounter birds in the fields, gardens, marshes, and bushlands as we move.

When we arrive, we will immediately board motorized wooden boats or canoes and begin exploring the water canals in search of the Shoebill, where our boatman and site guide will be waiting. It might not take an hour to find the shoebill. Local fisherman that venture out at dusk may be able to help with information if they witnessed the shoebill.

Because the shoebill is most active in the early morning hours when it is looking for lungfish, this is the optimum time to seek for it. It hunts by remaining immobile for long periods of time while waiting for fish to cross, then grabbing them with its big, strong shoe-shaped beak! Because it is engaged with collecting fish, the shoebill gives superb views and presentations because you may approach it without troubling it.

We may continue to visit several rivers and spend a few hours identifying various wetland species after spending some time with the shoebill.

After that, you may have lunch before your guide picks you up and drives you back to Kampala or Entebbe for your departure. This will be the last stop on your trip.
